Freelance License Dubai: eTrader or a Company Licence?
“Freelance licence” is often used as a general term, but Dubai has different licensing routes. We first match your actual work to the appropriate authority and legal structure.
Freelance / Sole Professional Licence
Designed for eligible individuals providing approved professional services independently. Dubai Development Authority describes its freelancer route as a Sole Professional License operated in the individual's birth name.
Independent professionalFreelance Licence + Visa
A licensing route may be combined with a residence visa pathway where the relevant authority/package permits it. Visa eligibility, duration and charges must be checked for the selected route.
Licence + residencyDET / DED eTrader
A Dubai mainland electronic-business licensing route for eligible applicants and approved activities. It is not automatically the same as a free-zone freelance permit, so eligibility should be checked before applying.

Dubai Development Authority freelancer route
DDA currently describes the service as a Freelancer License (Sole Professional License). It enables an approved independent professional to operate in their birth name rather than a brand name.
Issued on a sole-practitioner basis for eligible freelancer segments.
DDA currently publishes AED 7,500, plus applicable Knowledge and Innovation Dirham charges.
Passport copy, residence visa page if applicable, and other declarations/NOCs where applicable.
DDA currently lists an estimated service time of 2 working days after a compliant submission.
Planning to sell or operate online?
eTrader should be treated as a separate Dubai licensing route, not simply another name for a freelance permit. The suitable option depends on the applicant, proposed activity and current DET licensing rules.
Online Activity
We first check what you intend to sell or provide and whether the activity fits the available electronic-business licensing route.
Applicant Eligibility
Eligibility can depend on the current DET rules for the requested activity. We verify this before recommending eTrader.
Alternative Route
If eTrader is not suitable, BizCafe can compare a professional, commercial, mainland or free-zone licence instead.

Freelance licence & permit FAQs
Is a freelance permit the same as a company licence?
No. A freelancer route is generally structured around an individual sole professional and approved freelance activities. A company licence provides a different legal and operating structure and may be more appropriate for broader commercial plans.
Can I obtain a UAE residence visa with a freelance licence?
Some freelance licensing routes offer or support an eligible residence pathway. The visa is not something we assume automatically; BizCafe checks the selected authority, package and applicant eligibility first.
Is DET / DED eTrader the same as a freelance licence?
No. eTrader is a separate DET licensing route associated with eligible electronic-business activities and applicant conditions. A free-zone or DDA freelance licence is a different route.
Can I use a company or brand name as a freelancer?
It depends on the licensing route. For example, DDA states that its Sole Professional License enables the freelancer to conduct the profession in the individual's birth name rather than a brand name.
How much does a freelance licence cost?
Costs depend on the authority, activity, visa requirement and additional services. DDA currently publishes AED 7,500 as its freelancer permit fee plus applicable transaction charges; visa and other costs are separate where applicable.
Should I choose freelance, eTrader or a normal company?
That depends mainly on your activity, visa needs, customers, whether you require a trade name, and whether you plan to hire staff or add partners. BizCafe can compare the routes before you apply.
