Trademark & IP Services

Protect, Maintain and Expand Your Intellectual Property

The Ministry of Economy & Tourism provides a broad range of trademark services, from registration and renewal to transfer, objection, infringement complaints and international filing.

Trademark Registration

Prepare and coordinate UAE trademark applications for eligible names, logos and other registrable marks, including class selection and supporting documentation.

Trademark Inquiry

Use the official inquiry process before filing to identify potentially similar or conflicting marks and reduce avoidable filing risk.

Renewal

Maintain registered trademark protection by coordinating renewal within the applicable protection period and grace period.

Transfer & Ownership Changes

Coordinate transfer, assignment and ownership-data changes for registered marks where the supporting legal documents are available.

Opposition & Grievance

Coordinate opposition, response and grievance procedures when a conflicting mark is accepted or a trademark decision requires challenge.

Infringement Complaints

Assist with the administrative coordination of trademark-infringement complaints and supporting evidence, with specialist legal involvement where appropriate.

Madrid Protocol

For eligible UAE applicants with a local application or registration, coordinate international trademark protection through the Madrid System.

IP Portfolio Support

Keep trademark certificates, renewals, ownership records, class coverage and international registrations organised as the business grows.

Before You File

A Strong Trademark Application Starts With the Right Scope

Search & Conflict Review

Check the official register and assess potentially similar marks before committing to the application. A search cannot guarantee acceptance, but it can reveal obvious conflicts early.

Choose the Correct Classes

Trademark protection is linked to the goods and services covered by the application. The class strategy should reflect the business you operate now and the brand expansion you reasonably expect.

Decide What to Protect

A word mark, logo mark or combination mark can offer different practical protection. Some businesses may benefit from filing more than one form of the brand.

Practical point: Company-name reservation or trade-licence approval is not the same as trademark registration. A business name can be approved for licensing purposes without giving the same registered trademark rights.
UAE Registration Process

How Trademark Registration Works

The current Ministry process includes examination, publication, an opposition period and final registration.

1. Application & Examination

The application is submitted with the required owner and mark information. The Ministry examines the application and issues a decision within the applicable service timeframe.

2. Official Publication

After acceptance, the mark is published in the official trademark bulletin once the publication requirements are completed.

3. Opposition Period

The Ministry currently provides a 30-day opposition period calculated from publication in the trademark bulletin.

Current Ministry process: After the opposition period ends, the final registration stage must be completed within the applicable deadline so the trademark registration certificate can be issued.

International Trademark Protection

Expand Your Brand Beyond the UAE

The UAE participates in the Madrid Protocol, allowing eligible UAE trademark holders/applicants to seek protection in multiple participating jurisdictions through a central international filing system.

UAE Base Application / Registration

The Ministry currently requires a UAE trademark application or registered trademark as the basis for a Madrid international filing from the UAE.

Multiple Jurisdictions

The Madrid System can be used to request protection in more than 125 states through one international filing route, subject to each designated jurisdiction's examination.

Central Portfolio Management

The Madrid System can simplify later international changes, renewals and expansion of protection through a central administration process.

Important: An international Madrid application does not guarantee registration in every selected country. Each designated jurisdiction applies its own trademark law and examination.
Beyond Trademarks

Wider Intellectual Property Protection

Brand protection is only one part of an IP strategy. Depending on the business, other forms of intellectual property may also need separate protection.

Copyright

Creative works, written content, software, artistic works and other copyright assets can require documentation, registration support or rights-management planning.

Patents & Industrial Property

Technical inventions and certain industrial-property rights require a separate specialist filing and examination route from trademarks.

Industrial Designs

Distinctive product appearance and design features may require separate industrial-design protection where eligible.

IP Ownership & Contracts

Assignments, licensing, confidentiality and employment/contractor arrangements should align legal ownership of IP with the company that commercially uses it.

Scope: BizCafe can coordinate IP-registration and administrative support. Patent prosecution, complex infringement disputes, court proceedings or legal opinions may require a registered IP agent, patent specialist or UAE legal counsel.
Renewal & Portfolio Management

Registration Is the Beginning, Not the End

10-Year Protection Cycle

UAE trademark registration is renewable on the applicable 10-year protection cycle, subject to completing renewal within the prescribed period.

Renewal Monitoring

Missing renewal and post-expiry grace deadlines can create extra cost and risk. Trademark portfolios should be monitored well before expiry.

Keep Ownership Data Current

Changes in company name, owner data, assignments or portfolio structure should be reflected in the trademark record where the relevant Ministry procedure applies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Trademark & IP Protection FAQs

Is a trade name the same as a registered trademark?

No. A trade name is used for company licensing and identification. Trademark registration is a separate intellectual-property process that protects the mark in relation to the registered goods and services.

How long does UAE trademark protection last?

Trademark protection operates on a 10-year renewable cycle, subject to the applicable renewal requirements and deadlines.

Is there an opposition period after trademark acceptance?

Yes. The Ministry currently provides a 30-day opposition period from the date of publication in the official trademark bulletin.

Can a foreign person or foreign company register a UAE trademark?

Yes, but the Ministry currently requires trademark owners from outside the UAE to submit through a registered trademark agent and provide the duly legalised/notarised power of attorney required for that route.

Can one trademark cover every business activity?

Not automatically. Trademark protection is organised around the goods and services covered by the application. The classes should be selected according to the actual brand use and protection strategy.

Can I register my UAE trademark internationally?

Eligible UAE applicants or registered owners can use the Madrid Protocol route to seek international protection in participating jurisdictions, subject to the requirements of the Madrid System and each designated country.

Can BizCafe handle opposition or infringement matters?

BizCafe can coordinate the administrative process, documentation and specialist involvement. Where legal representation, hearings, complex infringement analysis or litigation is required, the matter should be handled with an appropriately qualified IP agent or legal adviser.
