COMPANY CLOSURE & RESIDENCY

What Happens to My UAE Visa If I Close My Company?

If your UAE residence visa is connected to a company that you own, manage or work for, closing that company can affect your immigration status. The visa does not simply become a separate personal residence after the business disappears, so the company closure and visa cancellation process should be planned together.

Simple Answer If your UAE residence visa is sponsored through the company being closed, the residence will normally need to be cancelled as part of the closure process. After cancellation, you may have a grace period to change your status, obtain another eligible residence visa or leave the UAE. The exact period depends on your residence category and current immigration rules.

Is My UAE Visa Automatically Cancelled When I Close the Company?

Not necessarily at the exact moment the trade licence is cancelled.

The company licence and the residence permit are separate government records, although they may be connected to each other.

When a company is being permanently closed, the immigration file, investor or partner residence, employee visas and other company-related immigration matters normally have to be settled as part of the overall closure process.

This is why simply allowing a trade licence to expire is not the same as properly closing a company and cancelling the related immigration records.

What Happens to an Investor or Partner Visa?

If your residence was obtained because you are an investor or partner in the company, that residence is connected to the qualifying company or shareholding.

When the company is dissolved, liquidated, transferred or otherwise closed, the basis on which that investor or partner residence was issued may no longer exist.

The residence therefore normally needs to be formally cancelled through the relevant immigration authority.

For investor or partner residence cancellation, the UAE immigration authority may require evidence connected to the commercial licence, such as a licence cancellation certificate or evidence of waiver or transfer, depending on the situation.

What Happens to My Emirates ID?

Your Emirates ID is linked to your UAE residence status.

When the associated residence permit is cancelled, the linked Emirates ID is also affected. Cancelling the residence does not mean that you continue to hold an independently valid Emirates ID until the printed expiry date.

If you later obtain a new UAE residence permit, the Emirates ID process will be connected to that new residence status.

What Happens to Employee Visas When a Company Closes?

Employee visas sponsored by the company also need to be dealt with before the company's immigration and labour files are fully closed.

Depending on the type of company and employee, this can involve:

  • Employment or work permit cancellation.
  • Settlement of applicable employee entitlements.
  • Residence visa cancellation.
  • Cancellation of the linked Emirates ID status.
  • Closure of the company's immigration and labour records when appropriate.

The correct sequence is important because unresolved employees or immigration records can delay the final company closure.

What If I Sponsor My Wife, Children or Other Family Members?

This is an important point that should be planned before cancelling the main sponsor's residence.

Where family members hold residence visas under your sponsorship, their residence status is connected to yours.

Under current UAE immigration procedures, family members' residence permits may need to be cancelled before the sponsor's residence is cancelled, unless an approved hold or alternative procedure is available.

Plan Before Cancelling If you intend to move immediately from your company-sponsored residence to another UAE residence, review the status of your dependants first. Cancelling the sponsor before planning their visas can create unnecessary additional procedures.

How Long Can I Stay in the UAE After Visa Cancellation?

There is no single grace period that should be assumed for every UAE residence visa.

Current UAE immigration rules provide different post-cancellation or post-expiry grace periods depending on the residence category.

Residence SituationWhat to Understand
Golden, Green and certain other eligible categoriesSome qualifying categories receive longer grace periods under current immigration rules.
Certain skilled workers and property ownersSeparate grace periods may apply depending on the immigration category.
Residence issued through a sponsor or hostA different grace period may apply.
Other residence categoriesThe applicable period should be checked against the individual's immigration record.

For this reason, do not rely on what happened to a friend or on an old rule such as “everyone gets 30 days.”

After the residence is cancelled, confirm the actual last date of legal stay shown in the immigration system.

What Happens If I Stay After the Grace Period?

If you remain in the UAE beyond the permitted period without obtaining a new valid status, overstay fines can apply.

Under current ICP guidance, the overstay fine after the applicable grace period is AED 50 per day.

The better approach is to decide what you want to do before cancelling the existing residence.

Can I Change to Another UAE Visa Instead of Leaving?

Potentially, yes.

Closing one company does not automatically mean that you must permanently leave the UAE. Depending on your circumstances and eligibility, you may be able to obtain another residence status.

New Company / Investor Visa

You may establish or invest in another eligible UAE company and obtain residence through the new structure.

Employment Residence

If you join another UAE employer, you may qualify for an employment-based residence permit.

Golden or Green Residence

Eligible investors, entrepreneurs, professionals or other qualifying applicants may consider longer-term residence categories.

Family Sponsorship

Depending on eligibility, residence through a qualifying spouse or family sponsor may also be possible.

Can I Open a New Company Before Cancelling the Old Visa?

In many situations, company formation and residence planning can overlap, but the correct sequence depends on the old company, the new jurisdiction and the individual's immigration status.

For example, you may be able to begin establishing the new company while your existing residence is still valid, and then coordinate the cancellation and status change once the new structure is ready.

This can be more practical than cancelling everything first and only then beginning a new incorporation.

If your intention is to remain in the UAE and continue doing business, plan the old-company closure and new-company formation together. The cheapest or quickest sequence is not always the safest immigration sequence.

Should I Cancel My Visa Before Cancelling the Trade Licence?

The exact sequence depends on the type of company and jurisdiction.

A Mainland company, Free Zone company and company undergoing formal liquidation may each have different closure procedures.

There may also be employee visas, partner visas, establishment cards, labour records, corporate bank accounts, leases, tax registrations and external approvals that need to be addressed.

Therefore, the closure should be treated as a process, rather than simply cancelling the licence first and dealing with everything else afterward.

What Should I Do Before Closing My UAE Company?

Review every visa linked to the company Identify shareholders, investors, managers, employees and dependants whose status may be affected.
Decide your next residence status Determine whether you will leave the UAE, move to another company, take employment or apply under another residence category.
Plan dependant visas If you sponsor family members, decide whether they need cancellation, temporary holding or transfer to another eligible sponsor.
Complete labour and immigration cancellations Settle the required employee and company immigration procedures in the correct order.
Complete the company closure Finalise the appropriate licence cancellation, liquidation or Free Zone closure procedures and any associated government records.
Confirm your immigration status After cancellation, verify your lawful stay period and complete your new status or departure before the permitted period ends.

What If My Company Licence Simply Expires?

Allowing a licence to expire is not the same thing as formally cancelling the company.

An expired company may still have unresolved records, immigration files, employees, fines, liabilities, tax registrations, leases or other obligations.

Likewise, an investor or partner should not assume that an expired trade licence automatically completes the residence cancellation process.

Where the business is permanently stopping, formal closure is generally the cleaner approach.

Does Closing the Company Cancel My Bank Account?

Company closure and bank account closure are separate procedures.

Before closing a corporate bank account, the company may need to settle outstanding transactions, collect receivables, pay liabilities and obtain any documents required for the liquidation or closure process.

The bank's own requirements should be checked because the account should not simply be abandoned after the trade licence is cancelled.
